Our Mission

Diablo Valley Literacy Council is an all-volunteer organization whose mission is to assist adults who have immigrated to our Diablo Valley community and endeavor to improve their English language skills. We offer free, flexible, weekly one-on-one English tutoring. 

Our Story

Since 1978, the Diablo Valley Literacy Council (DVLC), a private non-profit run entirely by volunteers, has been dedicated to literacy. DVLC offers free, one-on-one English tutoring to the English Language Learners of the Diablo Valley community. Tutoring is offered both in person and online, and scheduling flexible, allowing anyone to receive or provide tutoring regardless of availability. A volunteer Board of Directors oversees daily operations, offers tutor training workshops, and publishes a quarterly newsletter for members and tutors. Tutor membership is $15 annually, providing crucial support for the organization’s work. Volunteers are always encouraged to join and help sustain DVLC’s mission.

DVLC is a member of the national organization, ProLiteracy Worldwide.

ProLiteracy Worldwide has a paid staff of experts with skills in education, organization and communication which are made available to councils such as DVLC.

ProLiteracy Worldwide sponsors a conference that helps attendees discover new tools and strategies, implement dynamic programming, enhance leadership skills, and engage with a diverse group of peers from other literacy organizations.
